Welcome. Welcome to the best five-minute wine podcast with Forrest Kelly.
00:17
If someone made an action figure, Ian Cobble, Master Sommelier, what accessory would he
00:22
come with?
00:23
Oh man, I think I would probably be wearing board, you know, like board shorts, like surfing
00:29
board shorts and flip flops. And then I would have like a quick silver short sleeve t-shirt
00:34
on a hat with sunglasses on my head. And I would have a nice glass in my hand of burgundy.
00:42
I could see that. I could picture that on the comic book cover.
00:45
Yeah. So, you know, you know, as you know, all business in the glass, but all, you know,
00:49
I grew up on the beach and, you know, I love the beach. Anybody, you know, me, I just,
00:52
you know, I just want to retire on the beach of Kauai and three day. But, you know, the
00:57
salt water is just so great. And, you know, but it's cold right now in Napa. So I'm not
01:03
wearing flip flops, but I do wear Birkenstocks and flip flops a lot of the year. And even
01:08
when it's cold and people are like, what are you doing? I'm like, I don't know. I'm a little
01:12
confused, but it is what it is.
01:14
How would you rate yourself on a scale of stuffy and uptight on, you know, the wine
01:19
sommelier parts where everybody thinks that to, I've decanted a wine in a hotel bathroom
01:26
Yeah, I'm not I'm not I'm very, you know, I can't I can be a little bit particular. I think
01:32
you probably hear like, I really love great wines and I don't like, you know, BS made wines
01:37
with sugar and lots of oak. But at the same time, you know, I'll drink wine out of a out of
01:42
a Dixie cup and a hotel and a motel six and then, you know, off the side of the five freeway
01:47
if I need to. But I'm probably like a three or three or four on a 10 scale of that
01:51
stuffiness. I try to, you know, you know, growing up on the beach, you know, I grew up, you
01:56
know, very relaxed. I grew up going to a lot of reggae festivals.
01:59
I love reggae. I love that whole culture.
02:02
You know, I just love just people feeling comfortable around me as well.
02:06
And, you know, if you're kind of too stuffy, people don't feel comfortable.
02:09
So I've I've always gone out of my way in this in this business to just try to make people
02:15
who don't know much about wine around me feel comfortable as well.
02:18
I think that's important.
02:19
And, you know, if I need a decanter, I'll, you know, rinse out an old, you know, old
02:23
container I found under somebody's sink and just make sure it's not contaminated.
02:27
But anything can be a decanter and I'll drink wine out of anything.
02:30
And, you know, I'll frankly drink any wine.
02:32
I just don't really enjoy drinking oaky sweet wine.
02:35
But I can find a bottle for eight dollars at your local supermarket that's decent, you know,
02:40
in local kiosk or something.
02:41
But, you know, and wine doesn't have to be expensive to be good.
02:44
And especially when you get to Europe.
02:46
I mean, if you, you know, in America because of the import costs, but if you get to Europe
02:50
and you you go to a French supermarket like a Carrefour, you can find stuff for five dollars
02:54
a bottle. That's, you know, you know, your buddy's driving up the road and you can serve
02:58
that in a local in a paper cup, you know, and you're happy.
03:02
I figured you were too stuffy because on your website, you know, you've got a picture of
03:06
you on the beach with your wife and your children and you're on a camel.
03:09
Oh, is that camel photo up there?
03:11
Yeah, that was interesting. I was in I was on the beaches of Morocco during that travel
03:15
in Europe when I was twenty three.
03:18
I ended up in a beach called Essouira where Jonas Joplin and Jimi Hendrix got
03:23
together and they, you know, he made, you know, Castle in the Sand and Purple Haze and
03:26
all that stuff. And they spent a summer there.
03:28
But I lived in that town for a month.
03:30
And I when I went back about 20 years later, I visited some wineries up the hill and
03:35
went back to that same beach where I was, you know, broke in twenty two and went back
03:40
and was riding camels with the local, you know, white wine and drinking it out of out
03:46
of the bottle. If you can see that photo of the camel, I'm drinking out of the bottle on
03:49
the camel on the beaches of Essouira.
03:51
So, OK, last two questions here.
03:53
What is there a wine trend that you secretly love and your other Somali friends may
04:00
tease you about it? A trend?
04:03
Not necessarily.
04:04
I mean, I don't I don't really think there's many trends out there right now, to be
04:08
honest. I mean, a trend.
04:10
I mean, I mean, I don't know.
04:13
I mean, I don't mind a little bit of ice and rosé, for example.
04:16
That doesn't bother me if I'm out at a if I'm in a park, you know, and in my rosé is
04:22
getting warm and there's no way to cool down.
04:24
I'll add a couple ice cubes or to my white wine.
04:26
I'd rather have I'd rather have a slightly diluted cool glass of wine than a warm glass
04:30
of wine. Yeah.
04:31
Other than that, I can't think of any trends.
04:33
I mean, I don't know. Trend is I mean, I just don't know.
04:36
I say Petnat, I'm not a huge fan of Petnat, which is, you know, kind of the same
04:41
fermentation in the bottle all the way through.
04:44
I don't really I don't really like drinking Petnat very much.
04:47
Petit au naturel, which is what it means.
